Women’s entrepreneurship in green tourism integrates with sustainable development, improving local economies, preserving cultural capital, and alleviating detrimental environmental impacts. Regardless of the region, women entrepreneurs encounter sustainability-threatening, multi-dimensional barriers. This research is confined to constructive qualitative, interpretive, and phenomenological frameworks and used in-depth, semi-structured interviews with twenty-eight entrepreneurs in eco-lodge construction, nature-based tourism, and sustainable handicrafts in Yazd Province. Participants were identified using the purposive and snowball sampling technique, and sampling ceased when theoretical saturation was achieved. Data were subject to Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. Findings subdivided external and internal barriers and facilitators and the role of women in sustainable tourism development, the latter of which is a unique contribution of the research. Women entrepreneurs in green tourism face internal barriers which are primarily the fear of failure, insufficient digital marketing expertise, inadequate financial management skills, and family versus work role conflict. External barriers are primarily insufficient financing, bureaucratic impediments, prevailing traditional views, and poor technology. On the other hand, virtual social networks were determined to be the most significant facilitating factors together with the interest in local culture and nature, the ability to persevere, local knowledge, and family support. As such, the findings recommend the enhancement of the focused institutional support, the strengthening of the specific skill-trainings and the improvement of the communication infrastructures to bolster the position of women entrepreneurs in sustainable tourism development in Yazd.
